Regional Dialects in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland

Something that can make learning German a tiny bit confusing is the regional dialects. Sometimes people have a noticeable accent or just a different way of phrasing a common expression. Sometimes the words change entirely.

The Atlas zur deutschen Alltagssprache makes plots like those below for the usage of single words or phrase substitutions. For example, the plot below shows regional greetings in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

The next plot is another interesting visualization of the occurrence of city name endings (e.g. -hausen, -hof, -stadt, etc.) by location. The original plot and source code come from this site by Moritz Stefaner.
